Ginger Lime Coconut Body Scrub

This combo of ingredients is amazing!

If you’re a fan of body scrubs (or at least picking them up in the store and smelling every one of them!), then you’ll love the aroma of these delicious ingredients and how they come together to make a skin smoothing, cellulite reducing, moisturizing scrub.

I love making my own homemade beauty care products because that means I get to decide exactly what goes in it and can make sure all the ingredients are #qualitarianapproved!

Unfortunately, most body scrubs (especially if you’re shopping for them in generic drug stores) carry a boat load of chemical ingredients that actually cause more damage to your skin in the long run and even dry your skin out! Not cool!

You won’t find any chemical ingredients in this scrub here. In fact, it’s made with only clean beauty approved ingredients that it’s even edible! Yes, you can literally eat it!

So let’s get our hands dirty and whip up some homemade scrubs. I made these over the holidays and wrapped them up with pretty ribbon and gave them away as gifts. They were well received!

Ingredients
  1. 1/2 cup brown sugar (brand I used was Wholesome)
  2. 1/2 cup turbinado sugar (brand I used was Wholesome)
  3. 1/4 cup coconut oil (not melted, not solid, just room temperature and soft. I used Progressive Organic Coconut Oil)
  4. 1 1/2 tbsp freshly grated ginger
  5. 10-15 drops lime essential oil (I used doTerra)
Instructions
  1. Add all ingredients to a large mixing bowl.
  2. Using a hand blender, combine all the ingredients. This allows it to get nice and fluffy.
  3. Transfer scrub to a wide mouth mason jar and leave it in the shower. Use it 3-4 times a week, being extra gentle if you use it on your face.
  4. Be sure to focus on scrubbing all the 'important' areas such as, knees, elbows, hips, butt and thighs.

DIY: Homemade Chocolate Lover’s Massage Butter

Creams, potions, lubes, massage oils. How many of these have you used on yourself or your lover for Valentines Day? Or use on a regular basis to soften and moisturize?

It’s quite scary how many products on the market contain carcinogenic ingredients, ie. cancer causing ingredients. What’s more scary is that we bask ourselves in these creams and oils and all those chemicals get absorbed through our skin and right into our bloodstream.

And worse yet, we use chemical laden lubes and massage oils on our very-special-and-oh-so-beautiful private parts! Did you know that these generic products actually age your skin!

So what do we do? We make our own!

I whipped up an easy and ‘delicious’ massage butter that is perfect to use for Valentines Day! It won’t age your skin and it does not contain any chemical and toxic ingredients. In fact, it will actually moisturize your precious skin, soothe dryness and lift your sensual senses with sweet and delicate notes from rose and orange essential oil.

Rose otto is such a beautiful oil. It has a positive effect on emotions and helps to lift your spirits!

Sweet orange helps to bring clarity, brighten your mood and is sweetly uplifting.

Cacao butter – real, rich chocolate in it’s purest state. Full of skin soothing nutrients and an incredible emollient.

Coconut oil – loaded with healthy fats that help to moistures and soothe skin. Plus it’s antibacterial and safe to use on all your special spots!

Here’s What You’ll Need:
1 small mason jar
Heat proof bowl to use for double boiler
Spoon

Ingredients:
4 oz. cacao butter or 1 large chunk of cacao butter paste (as you can see in photo)
1 tbsp coconut oil
1/4 tsp ground organic vanilla bean or 8 drops vanilla essential oil
5 drops rose otto essential oil
3 drops sweet orange essential oil

Directions:
Using a double boiler, melt cacao butter. Keep heat to medium and using a spoon, stir the cacao to help melt. Once cacao is almost completely melted, add in coconut oil, vanilla bean, and essential oils. Stir well. Pour mixture into mason jar and leave on counter to cool. *Be careful lifting bowl from double boiler! It’s hot. Be sure to use an oven mitt.

Once butter has cooled, screw on the lid and put in the fridge for 2 hours or overnight to set.

To use, leave out at room temperature to soften for about an hour. Cacao butter and coconut oil are solid at room temperature. Rub a small amount of massage butter between hands to soften the butter.

All done!

Now soothe, slather and get busy! 😉

A Note on Fat and Why You NEED to Make THIS Bacon recipe!

Bacon is good!

I’m sure you never thought you’d hear a nutritionist say that!?

Now you know I’m all about quality. When I say bacon, I don’t mean the generic kind you buy at just any grocery store that is loaded with nitrates and sodium.

I’m talking bacon that is free of all chemicals, preservatives, pesticides and herbicides. That kinda bacon. Go get your hands on that kinda bacon and get to cooking up this delicious recipe!

You will love the blend of salty and sweet in this delicious mix! Fall provides us with such an array of amazing, nutrient rich vegetables and not to mention, a variety of incredibly tasty apples. This recipe helps you utilize all that goodness into one pot!

I served this up with some roasted chicken thighs for a delicious and nutritious dinner.

Now…a quick note on bacon, and fat! You see, our bodies NEED fat. I don’t advise eating bacon everyday, as it is a saturated fat but still a GOOD fat as saturated is NOT the enemy! Fat and ‘high’ cholesterol foods, such as eggs, are needed for hormone development, cell membranes and most importantly, your brain!

In the paleolithic era, dating back tens of thousands of years ago (caveman styles), their diets were comprised of 75% fat (from fatty fish, meats, wild vegetables, eggs, nuts, seeds), whereas today, our fat intake is a mere 20%! Thats a huge difference.

Fatty fish and fish oil, coconut oil, hemp seeds or hemp oil, nuts, seeds, grass fed meats and grass fed butter; these are all superior choices of fat! I highly encourage you to include them in your diet.

Now…let’s eat some bacon! (although the picture may not do this recipe justice, I swear it’s delicious!)

Ingredients
  1. 3 slices organic nitrate-free bacon
  2. 3-4 cups Brussel sprouts, cut into 4
  3. 1 medium sweet potato, diced and skin left on
  4. 1 apple, diced (I used a fuji apple)
  5. 1 tsp dried oregano
  6. 1 tsp dried rosemary
  7. 1 tsp chili flakes
  8. sea salt and fresh ground pepper
Instructions
  1. Preheat oven to 400 degrees.
  2. In a large cast iron pan, cook bacon slices over medium-high heat. Once bacon is cooked, set aside. Reserve grease.
  3. In the same skillet over medium-high heat, sauté sweet potato for 5 minutes in bacon grease. Transfer sweet potato to a large baking dish, add in chopped brussel sprouts, sprinkle with dried herbs, chili flakes, sea salt and pepper and roast for 25-35 minutes, until sprouts are slightly golden.
  4. About 10-15 minutes into roasting, add in chopped apple. Make sure not to overcook. In the last minute, dice bacon and stir into pan. Season with additional salt and pepper if necessary.
  5. *Alternatively, if your cast iron pan is large enough, you can add your brussel sprouts to the pan and roasted them with the sweet potato in the oven.
  6. Serve immediately on it’s own or along the side of a main dish.
