How to Know if You REALLY Have Leaky Gut

It seems like just recently we’ve started to hear the term Leaky Gut. The truth is, it’s been happening for a really long time, and within the naturopathic and functional medicine communities, it’s a term that has been used forever.

However, mainstream medicine hasn’t really been addressing this important health issue and it’s about time they start!

In fact, the father of modern medicine Hippocrates said “All disease begins in the Gut” and research is now proven he was absolutely right.

 So what exactly is leaky gut?

Basically, leaky gut syndrome (otherwise known as “intestinal hyperpermeability”) is condition that happens as a consequence of intestinal tight junction malfunction.

These “tight junctions” are the gateway between your intestines and what is allowed to pass into the blood stream. 

These tight junctions are important! They keep things out like toxins, microbes and undigested food particles.

But having leaky gut is essentially like having the gates broken from your intestines to your blood stream so many of these particles that should never have been able to enter have now gotten through.  

When this happens it causes inflammation throughout your body leading to a variety of diseases.

You end up having particles circulating around your bloodstream that should never have been there to begin with!

What does this mean for you?

There are a host of issues and symptoms that could arise from having leaky gut. And if you happen to be: stressed, on medications or over the counter drugs, rush through your meals and barely chew your food, lack fiber and nutrient dense foods, eat too much sugar, smoke and drink alcohol, there is a very good chance that you have leaky gut!

So exactly what symptoms or health issues might you experience?

There’s a lot, such as:

  • Autoimmune disorders

  • IBS or IBD
  • Thyroid Problems
  • Inflammatory Skin Conditions
  • Autism
  • Mood Disorders
  • Fatigue
  • Food Sensitivities
  • Joint Pain

The good news is that you can feel better and you can heal your gut, which will mean you’ll heal all your other health issues too!
